Founded by two former Maryland public school teachers, SparkEd Literacy was originally created as a result of a shared vision between two lifelong friends.
We first met in kindergarten and spent our entire school career together within Baltimore County Public Schools. We both went on to become Montgomery County Public School teachers. Based on our experiences within the classroom, we saw a significant need for specialized literacy instruction for many of our students. We sought to create a service providing all students with effective, research-based reading instruction. We both pursued further professional development in reading science and dyslexia in order to best meet the diverse needs of our learners.
Taryn has received her M.Ed. in Elementary Education. She is currently on the path to become a C-SLDS (Certified Structured Literacy Dyslexia Specialist) through Neuhaus Education Center using the Concepts in Literacy curriculum. Taryn has completed a supervised practicum through the Atlantic Seaboard Dyslexia Education Center using the Sounds in Syllables dyslexia therapy curriculum. She has also completed a comprehensive Orton-Gillingham training through the Institute for Multisensory Education.
Rachel currently works full-time as a K-5 reading specialist within Maryland. She is over halfway through her journey to become a C-SLDS. She is currently completing her supervised practicum and coursework through Neuhaus Education Center using the Concepts in Literacy curriculum. Rachel has also completed a comprehensive Orton-Gillingham training through the Institute for Multisensory Education.
We believe all children should have access to effective reading instruction, and this instruction should be backed by decades of research on how children learn to read. We are passionate about sparking a love of reading within our students and showing them that they can become confident readers with the appropriate instruction. We would love the opportunity to get to know your learner and be part of their educational team!
